Falls Creek part of record-breaking journey around the globe

A father and daughter, who hail (and ski) from Colorado have embarked on a record-breaking project which contains a poignant message.

Ken White and his nine-year-old daughter, Victoria, are attempting to smash a world record skiing seven continents by the youngest person

The current 'titleholder' 12-year-old American boy Tim Hayes took nine years to ski seven continents, but the Colorado-based father and daughter decided they'd do it in twelve months or less, raising money (and awareness) for cancer research as they carried out their record-breaking odyssey around the globe.

White, who has been receiving chemotherapy for his stage three Melanoma cancer, read about young Tim Hayes' accomplishment in one of his ski magazines and felt he and his daughter could go one better.

"We started our epic quest (which is raising awareness, and money for ongoing research into Melanoma at Colorado University) with a trip to Zermatt, Switzerland, followed by a visit to Morocco," said White.  "Our third stop was Falls Creek, in Australia, where people couldn't have been nicer.  It was quite an experience for both of us.

"We were surprised with the amount of snow there was at Falls Creek because we couldn't see a lot on the bus trip up the mountain.  We were also impressed with size of the resort and Victoria saw gum trees for the first time.  We skied Wombat's Ramble, which is Australia's longest beginner ski trail, went snow tubing and Victoria was invited to try some aerial manoeuvres on the Bungy Trampoline in the Village Bowl.

"We were told about your Slip Slop Slap awareness campaign in the quest to prevent skin cancer, particularly amongst younger Australians, which has been very successful down here.

"It is important children under 18 don't get sunburnt as they enjoy the outdoors."

Victoria said: "My dad has stage three Melanoma cancer and our attempt to ski on every continent is to raise awareness about the research being done where my dad was treated."

The very adventurous father and daughter went skiing at Valle Nevado ski area in Chile, on their way home to Colorado.  The next phase of this record-breaking journey will be a trip travel to Antarctica and Victoria will ski the lower slopes of Everest, in Nepal, before they head back to Colorado.

White said: "Our last stop is Winter Park (where Victoria learnt to ski) where we'll complete our odyssey and hopefully raise $250,000 US towards the eradication of this deadly disease."
